I love to meal plan and meal prep.
Especially when I meal prep for weight loss.
The simplicity of it!
As a mom meal planning has become a thing for me a long ago. With kids, jobs and a million different things happening all the time meal planning takes the guess work out of what are we going to eat.
I take an hour each Friday and pick out all the meals for the week. This includes breakfasts, lunches, dinner and snacks for my entire family.
Now, meal prep is a fairly newer thing to me.
And, let me tell you meal prepping has been a game changer!
Each Sunday I meal prep whatever I can ahead of time.
This means washing all of my produce. Cutting up anything that I can for easy access. And cooking or baking certain parts of meals to make meal time quicker.
I take this a step further for myself. I meal prep my meals completely a few days at a time.
Having all my meals and snacks in individual containers helps me eat healthy and stay on track with a healthy lifestyle.

- Helps You Stay On Track
By meal prepping you are learning what portion control is. This helps when you are trying to lose weight. We sometimes do not realize how much we are eating and those extra calories can add up.
When you have all of your meals ready to go your are less likely to grab something unhealthy.
Think about that hangry feeling, you need to eat NOW! Well sometimes we will grab something unhealthy because it’s easily available. With meal prepping you have your healthier option ready to go.

This is hard to do when you have kids, sweets will find their way into your home.
But, you can limit them and choose healthier options instead and stick to it.

Between jobs, kids and everything else in between sometimes cooking dinner is not an option on busy nights. Well you just made room for all of that including a healthy dinner, it’s already in the fridge.

Meal planning in general will save you money.
When you plan your meals, purchase what you need and meal prep the temptation of ordering takeout goes way down.
When we order take out for our family of 5 we spend close to $50 give or take. I can make 2 meals for that price plus a little leftover meal for my husband to take to work.
You will be wasting so much less food and money.
Is Meal Prepping Good For Weight Loss?
When you are trying to shed some weight meal prep is one of your besties.
You control the portions and ingredients.
That is not so simple when you order in.
Losing weight does not mean you have to stick to bland foods either. It’s actually the opposite! Create different menus each week and add new foods to try.
Keep it exciting! You will be more likely to stick with it!
Tools you need to meal prep for weight loss:
You do not need anything fancy here just a few things!
- Meal containers
I find any locking lid container to be ideal. My favorite brand is Sistema containers. They have many different sizes and varieties to choose from. I have used them for years and they have held up beautifully.
- Dressing cups
I love to keep small “dressing” cups on hand when I meal prep. For example when I meal prep a salad, I add the little cup filled with the dressing instead of pouring it on. This helps with portion and not having soggy dishes later on.
- Reusable bags
I like to keep a few of these on hand for snacks when I run out of containers. They are great for carrot sticks, or nuts even fruit. That way you are not going through a bunch of throwaway bags each week.

Meal prep healthy food ideas:
The best part, meal prep food! Here is a list of food that I personally meal prep almost every week for my whole family.
Then I portion out my meals and snacks. Do not forget to meal prep snacks! This makes it so simple to grab a healthier option.
- Hard boiled eggs – great snack option or to add on salads.
- Salads – I have a salad for lunch almost every day. You can add protein with chicken (meal prepped!)
- Egg bites – I make a muffin tray of eggs, spinach and cheese
- Roasted sweet potatoes
- Roasted veggies
- Chicken breasts – I mix these up with different spices each week
- Carrots and hummas
- Chick pea tuna salad – Lightly mash chick peas and mi with low fat mayo. I like to add a little onion powder and celery.
- Celery sticks and low fat ranch dressing
- Almonds and dark chocolate chips
- Protein pancakes – I LOVE the Birch Bender’s brand
- Fruit salads – anything I have on hand
