Does Cardio Make You Fat?
Why am I gaining weight doing cardio? Why am I not losing fat by doing cardio workouts? Does cardio make you fat?
These are questions I see a lot!
When you are looking to slim down, most people turn to cardio workouts.
Why? Well, because it’s a simple way to start. There are no planning workouts. Cardio is less intimidating and you can just start jogging around your neighborhood.
However, by doing just cardio you might be killing yourself with very little results.
So, does cardio make you fat?
Yes, it could and here is why…
Cardio itself is not the cause of gaining weight but its the type of weight that you are holding onto.
Long and slow sessions of cardio do nothing for fat loss.
When you are briskly walking for up to an hour each day your actually losing muscle not fat. Less lean muscle you have, the slower your metabolism is.
Sure cardio is great for heart health but when it comes to body fat it’s not the best solution. You will not see the results you want.
You need to challenge your body when it comes to burning fat.
If you keep your training the same for long periods of time your body will get used to it an hold onto fat. This goes for any type of training whether it’s cardio or strength training.
When your muscles are put to the same test time and time again they adapt.
When you see your workouts becoming easier, although that’s an amazing goal, now it’s time to change it up. Your body is becoming smarter how its using fuel now.
You either have to change the intensity or try a new form of training. This is why HIIT has become so effective for fat loss. When doing HIIT a few times a week you are expending more energy is short bursts. Your pushing yourself and increasing your metabolic rate which will increase your metabolism.

People that rely on cardio, eat more than they should and put extra stress onto your body.
When you are walking, jogging, running whatever you are doing for cardio think about the affects it has on your joints. Running is tough on your joints! By doing this you are adding extra stress to your body.
When your body is under stress, your cortisol levels rise. Cortisol is often called the stress hormone. It helps regulate your metabolism. Higher cortisol levels you have the more fat you are going to hold on to.
Now how does this work with eating more?
Simple. When you are stressed the more likely you are going to eat, right?
So stress = higher cortisol levels = calorie increase.
They all go hand in hand here.
So if you want to maximize your efforts, lose fat and change your body composition cardio alone is not going to get those results and in actuality cardio will make you fat.
What can I do to lose weight and burn fat?
Make your workouts all about quality!
You can get a great workout in under an hour or even under 30 minutes if you focus on the intensity.
If traditional cardio is your jam then make it count. Start with a warm up for a few minutes, then sprint for 30 seconds, walk it off or take a minute to recover and repeat.
Short bursts of expending energy are much better at burning fat than a steady state cardio session.
Build your muscles with weight training. Building lean muscle tissue can help speed up your metabolism.
